Teen
Drug Abuse
When we started this web site, I had in mind the purpose of reaching families
who didn't know where to turn or wanted information and direction but
weren't sure of the extent of their teen's "use". My hope is
to reach those families who suffer from teen drug abuse and lead them
to help.
In the 80's and 90's many teens were placed in treatment due to misdiagnoses
and lack of competent intake procedures. I don't think every child is
addicted. Some are and some are abusing due to stress or loss/grief. Treatment
will be different for each of these two categories. I think that it is
important to find out the extent of his or her "use" from
a professional who has specialized in addiction and then decide on
a course of action based on the diagnosis. This involves having the strength
and good sense to find out.
Have the courage to examine the problem and turn toward the problem
instead of away from it. This problem is neither one you have asked
for nor that you want. It can be ugly and instill fear. In my years of
counseling, I have not met one family who welcomed the problem. More than
likely, most felt like you probably do. They felt afraid of the future
for their child and their families and frustrated that the problem arose
in the family. Many were from families where there were other problem
users or drinkers. This complicated matters, made it more difficult to
obtain and use help and took a strong commitment from all to survive and
rise from the chaos. Many families do not seek help because of these fears
and feelings of discouragement. Don't be one of them. It is scarier not
to get help. Left untreated, what happens to the family next is not pretty.
The way to overcome drug abuse is education and correct action, which
is given by a qualified "coach." This site will not do therapy
with you. It will inform you of the problem in general and lead you to
help. Please take the help. It's worth every penny you spend if
you seek qualified professionals who have a history of success with their
clients. With addiction, the treatment of choice, in my opinion, is
group therapy to both educate and motivate those victims of drug abuse.
Learning comes also from others in the group who are talking about the
same concerns. The group atmosphere is safe and members are "in touch"
with how deadly the problem is. This atmosphere provides a safe place
for peers to confront members on their behavior where there is acceptance
of the problem lead by a qualified facilitator who can't be "snowed."
